Protecting your vintage car from theft

Kirk Gomez

Having a vintage car is not for the faint-hearted—it's for the absolute enthusiast. Between the security issues, car maintenance and reliability issues, it can take up a lot of your time. Here are some security tips if you have vintage car.

Upgrade your garage security

Firstly it's well worth having your security system extend out to the garage. Not only should you have motion activated alarms in the garage, but also having upgrading the garage door to a full security door can help delay entry and discourage "smash and grabbers". If you install automatic door openers, even heavy doors are not an issue to open and close multiple times a day if needed.

Ensure that the garage door opens and closes rapidly after you leave or enter, to prevent an intruder from sneaking into your garage as you race off trying to get to work in the mornings.

If you have a connecting door between the house and garage, it's important that this is a sturdy deadlocked external style door. Many home builders will place an indoor style door by default, however an external door will be harder to kick in and will have a peephole so you can check on any unexpected noises without directly confronting intruders.

Store your keys separately

While you might have a key rack to store the keys for your daily drive, you need to keep your vintage car keys and the garage door keys or opener somewhere that is a bit harder to find like the tin or in your winter boots. While someone might be able to hotwire the car, the more obstacles you put in their way, the safer your car will be.

If you are willing to slightly modify your car, an immobiliser can also help discourage car theft.

Keep a comprehensive photo library

While you may not need too much convincing to keep taking photos of your car, these can provide a good record if something does happen to your car. Thieves often repaint or try to disguise distinctive cars so keeping record of any distinctive features can help you verify your car. A photo library can also be useful if you lend your car out for showing and you end up getting damage from passing by visitors.

With some small upgrades to your garage security, you'll be able to spend many happy years to come with your vintage car. Learn more about security options by contacting resources like Aus Secure.
