Three Signs That You Should Have Your Garage Door Replaced

It's all too easy to become oblivious to the condition of your garage door. Whilst a bit of wear and tear isn't usually any cause for alarm, there are certain circumstances in which it is advisable to have a worn-out door replaced. Here are three examples of such circumstances.
You have converted the garage
If like many people, you have chosen to transform your once-cluttered garage into a functional space, such as an extra bedroom or home office, then it may be wise to invest in a new door. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, a standard garage door does not usually allow for quick and easy access; they tend to be quite unwieldy and difficult to handle. If you plan to enter your newly-designed room via this entrance on a regular basis, it makes sense to purchase a door which is easier to open, such as a side-hung model which comes with the same kind of handles you would find on an exterior or interior house door.
Secondly, it may be sensible to replace the garage door if your new space will be used to store any valuable technology (for instance, if it has been converted into a home office and now contains expensive equipment such as computers, printers and scanners). Whilst security may not have been at the forefront of your mind when your garage was being used as a storage container for low-value clutter like dusty old books and toys, it is probably a more pressing concern now. As such, you might want to consider purchasing a garage door which comes with some extra security features, such as one with multiple locks, or an electronic model that has an integrated keypad entry system.
Rust has taken hold
Certain types of metal garage doors, such as steel, for example, are prone to rusting, particularly if they are frequently exposed to heavy rainfall. Rust doesn't just spoil the aesthetic appeal of a garage door; it can also destroy its screws, bolts and nuts, as well as the torsion spring, and thus prevent it from operating as it should. Furthermore, if a hole forms in the metal as a result of the rust, rainwater could end up seeping into the garage and ruining the items that are being stored inside.
Those who specialise in garage door repairs can usually replace corroded components and remove small rust patches; however, if the rust has been allowed to spread and the entire door is covered in it, it is usually more cost-effective to replace the door, rather than have it repaired.
You intend to put your property on the market
Carrying out home improvements to increase the potential sale price of your home can end up being quite expensive and time-consuming; things like kitchen renovations or re-carpeting can cost thousands of dollars and take several weeks, or even months to complete. Conversely, replacing your garage door is significantly cheaper and typically takes less than a day to do. Additionally, given that the garage is one of the first features prospective buyers will see when approaching the property, purchasing a new garage door is arguably one of the best ways to boost your home's kerb appeal.
If you decide to buy a new door, make sure that you choose one that blends in with the style and colour of your home. For example, if you have a period property with wood trim windows, it may be a good idea to purchase a classic-style, panelled door made from the same type of wood. You could also match the hardware (i.e. the hinges or handles) to those used on the exterior doors of your house.
