Roller doors play an important role in the protection and security of your home and car. For many people, roller doors serve as the last line of defence between a criminal and your car, but they also have a deterrent effect that will dissuade many would-be crooks from trying to gain access to your home. However, as useful as roller doors can be, many people make easily avoidable mistakes that can be addressed by adhering to the following four tips.
1) Try to keep your roller door shut whenever it's not being used
Let's kick things off with the obvious. We get it—it can be a hassle to open and shut your roller door several times a day. If you have been lucky enough to have never been burgled before, it is easy to become apathetic. Regularly keeping your roller door open—especially at night—makes it much easier for criminals to case your house. It is important that you and your family and housemates form good habits.
2) Don't ignore mechanical failure
Roller doors are a great way to protect your assets, but if there is mechanical failure that allows you to manually open the door, then this doesn't do you or your family any good. It might take some time and money to have someone fix the problem, but imagine how much more costly it would be if your car was stolen or vandalised (or if your house was accessed through a back door).
3) Don't leave your remote in the car
This is especially important if the car is on the street side of the roller door. If a thief jimmies their way into your car, they can then steal your roller-door remote and use it to force their way inside the roller door. They might even be shrewd enough to wait until everyone has left for work, giving them an easy way to commit daylight robbery.
4) It is most secure to select an opaque roller door
It might be tempting to try to pick a roller door that has some translucent properties to it; however, if possible, ensure that nobody can see whether any cars are parked behind it. A shrewd thief can peer through the roller door to check whether there are any cars there. If there aren't any, this means that thieves have a much greater chance of making a successful incursion on your house.
