Which Type of Sectional Garage Door Would Best Fit Around Your Needs?

Kirk Gomez

If you want to get a sectional garage door, you essentially have three different configurations from which to choose. Most people will go with the common vertically-opening door, but you can also pick a roller shutter type or a round-the-corner type.

There's really no right answer when it comes to these three configurations. You just have to look at the pros and cons of each option and then decide which one would best work around your needs. Here's a quick overview to help you on your way.

 Vertically Opening Sectional Garage Door

Vertically opening sectional garage doors rise up from the ground and are then collected along the ceiling of the garage across a railing system.

These are the most common of all sectional configurations, and it isn't hard to see why. They are easy to maintain and can take plenty of insulation material. All in all, the vertically opening sectional is great for people who don't really have any special requirements.

Round the Corner Sectional Garage Door

Round the corner sectionals open horizontally, with the railing system lying across the floor. They come with plenty of benefits over the normal vertically-opening sectional, but those benefits are off-set by a number of drawbacks.

Round the corner garage doors tend to be most useful when dealing with a garage that has a very low roofline or with those that have storage areas right above. They also use a little less energy since you can choose to have two that meet in the middle; instead of opening the whole thing, you can just open one. Of course, round the corner doors mean you will not be able to use one of your walls. More importantly, they are hard to maintain since dirt, debris, leaves, and plenty else can get lodged in the track system.

Roller Shutter Sectional Garage Door

Roller shutter sectionals look just like vertically-opening sectionals when you open and close them, but the sections are rolled up into one roll instead of deposited along a railing system.

While vertically-opening sections take up ceiling space and round the corner sectionals take up a wall, roller shutters don't take up very much space at all, so they're great if you like to store plenty of stuff in the garage. That said, it's hard to buy roller shutters with lots of insulation since this will make each slat too bulky and heavy, so these aren't great if you live somewhere quite cold.
