Components of Your Garage Doors That Require a Routine Tune Up

No matter what type of garage door you have, whether it is an automatic door or a manual model, it will require maintenance from time to time. The reason for this is your garage doors are tasked with heavy-duty operations and are typically use on a daily basis. Thus, they will be susceptible to wear and tear if they are not well taken care of. Moreover, caring for your garage doors by giving them a tune up on occasion will also prolong their lifespan. Here are two components that you should pay particular attention to when carrying out garage door maintenance.
Rollers and weather-stripping
The first place to start would be to lubricate the rollers of your garage doors. Since these components are tasked with lifting the garage doors, they need to be well lubricated for them to operate smoothly. It should be noted that over lubricating the roller could pose a problem as the grease will attract dirt and eventually cause clogs in the rollers. Thus, try not to be heavy-handed when applying the lubricant and ensure you mop up any excess that may be left behind.
After lubricating the rollers, you should inspect the weather stripping. This weather-stripping is what functions to ensure that your garage is energy efficient. If the weather-stripping shows signs of damage by being cracked or feels brittle to the touch, it would be time to have it replaced by a professional garage door technician.
Locking bars
A common culprit when it comes to garage door issue is lock bars that have become misaligned. This misalignment comes about due to constant opening and closing of the garage doors. Over time, the lock bars stop sliding smoothly into place and could result in you losing the ability to secure your garage doors. Luckily, this maintenance measure is quite simple.
The first thing to do would be to loosen the screws that are on the brackets that secure the lock bars in place. Proceed to gently hammer the lock bars until they are evenly aligned with the slots on the brackets. Finish by inserting the screws back and tightening them. Your lock bars should be able to slide in an out of the brackets smoothly.
As an added maintenance measure, you may want to consider lubricating the lock bars to facilitate smoother opening and closing. However, if you see signs of corrosion on these metallic components, you would be best advised to call a garage door technician to replace them with new parts.
